OPEN Talk: Building a Simplified Microservices Workflow
Do you have various cloud-based microservices being managed under one enterprise API umbrella for discovery, security, interoperability and billing? This workshop will demonstrate how API Connect can become your tool of choice for such a job by connecting services from different worlds - Node.js, Swift on the Server, AI and Cloud.

The Node.js microservice will use Watson Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech, with Watson Conversation Service to deliver Voice UI and improved functionality. The workshop will also cover a Swift on the Server microservice management page utilizing IBM Kitura with Cloudant NoSQL DB backend -  all running on IBM Cloud.

During the workshop we will show a TJBOT - a small Raspberry Pi-based robot - making an API call to the developed API and connecting it with an iOS device over the same API platform.

OPEN Talk: Strategies to Build an API Program at Scale

Many enterprises that have adopted an API program struggle to figure out a way to consistently scale the program and approach across many different lines of business. The key questions they must ask themselves are how do you design APIs that are highly consumable? And how do you publish them in a way so they are discoverable?

This session will discuss the importance of treating an API like a product and thinking about the full lifecycle around it, from design to build, test, deploy, and manage, to ensure the API is consumed by the end user. We will also discuss how to create an app store-like experience for your employees, partners, and customers to ensure your APIs are easy to discover and reuse.

OPEN Talk: Data APIs Don’t Discriminate
The exploding API economy, combined with an advanced analytics market projected to reach $30 billion by 2019, is driving a market demand to expose more data from APIs. Business analysts, data engineers, and data scientists have been getting left behind in existing API strategies. This is because many APIs are designed to integrate with applications to extend functionality, however these data workers are looking for APIs that facilitate direct data access to support analytics. Data APIs are specifically designed to provide that frictionless data access experience to support analytics across standard interoperable interfaces such as OData (REST) or ODBC/JDBC (SQL). Consider expanding your API strategy to service the developers in this $30 billion market.

OPEN Talk: How We Enabled off-eBay Shopping and Streamlined Selling at eBay
Public APIs are a big deal. They are intermediaries that enable applications to interact. Designing a set of interfaces that will meet business objectives, attract developers, and be long-lived is a technical challenge. After dealing with SOAP-based legacy APIs for years, we delivered new modern family of RESTful buy and sell public APIs which enable buyers to shop off-eBay and sellers to manage their business at scale. At eBay, our challenge was to create a vision for the new APIs, plan ahead, and deliver a stable contract that will last for years, even as we add business capabilities. Our API design is developer-centric and focused on exposing valuable solutions to empower third-party developers. APIs represent the consumer’s view of the functionalities. They are the front door to the portfolio of internal capabilities and have requirements tailored to external clients. This presentation outlines difficulties we faced and approaches we took to deliver new APIs and achieve consistency across capabilities.

CANCELLED: OPEN Talk: What Does it Take to Build and Run Blockchain Infrastructure?
Blockchains will disrupt much of today's financial, insurance, records, and identity systems. However, to build a blockchain application requires knowledge of everything from peer-to-peer networks, cryptography, consensus, protocols, hashing techniques, key management, mining, privacy, etc. Understanding and keeping up with ever-changing developments requires extremely specialized skills for developers and companies trying to build blockchain applications. Do you know what it takes to build and run a blockchain infrastructure platform? Come to this session to find out what it takes and why you may want to consider a blockchain API provider like BlockCypher. BlockCypher is a blockchain infrastructure company. BlockCypher enables companies building blockchain applications to do so easily via APIs and Blockchain Web Services (BWS). Companies can focus on their business applications while leaving the heavy lifting of running the entire blockchain infrastructure stack to BlockCypher.

OPEN Talk: Securing APIs at Scale - A DevOps Approach
DevOps teams and API-first architecture have had a significant impact on the application development landscape. They have enabled organizations to speed up application development, easily use complex functionality, and enhance collaboration with service providers and customers. In fact, many enterprises derive an increasing amount of their revenue from APIs used by customers. However, scalable security solutions for APIs are notoriously elusive, even as DevOps faces increasing security demands. Thus, enterprises face a looming threat from under-protected APIs (underscored by the OWASP Top 10 2017update).

This talk will focus on enumerating this risk, discuss the challenges, and explore DevOps focused solutions. First, we will evaluate applications in the IoT, online retail and financial mobile spaces to highlight the complexity of managing the technical and business risk. Second, we examine the difficulty in securing these applications and examine why web scanners don’t work. Third, we present a scalable DevOps aligned testing framework, Peach API Security, to automate testing. Fourth, we discuss SDLCintegration for the framework. Finally, we will discuss real world results.

This talk will allow attendees to walk away with
+ Deeper understanding of business and technical risks around APIs
+ Enumerate real world challenges while highlighting weaknesses in current security tooling
+ Present scalable solutions for securing APIs to the benefit of DevOps teams

OPEN Talk: Command your Microservices Fleet to Success with Kubernetes and Istio
Microservices revolutionized the way we all look at app development and is now one of the most popular programming architectures. Now, Docker alongside Kubernetes is changing the way teams look at deployments of these microservices. Kubernetes provides powerful production-grade orchestration for your “dockerized” microservices; with Istio on top, you gain the capabilities to connect, manage and secure your microservices. All this allows developers to focus on writing actual code and lets the framework take care of the rest. In this talk, we’ll discuss the potential of these frameworks as well as show a real-world demo of transforming a microservices application to use Kubernetes and Istio.

OPEN Talk: Best Practices in Deploying API Gateways
Today there are 8 billion connected “things” using APIs as the foundation of innovation in architecture design and modernization, enabling applications and services to be exposed for consumers to access in a manner that simplifies integration and reduces the burden of interoperability. There are many types of APIs ranging from REST, Cloud, Mobile, B2B, IoT, and Web Service APIs, but to properly secure, authenticate, and integrate APIs, API Security Gateway technology is required. An API Security Gateway enables these applications and services to be securely exposed, however, not all API Gateway technologies are created equal.
